What

After completing the USU Master Gardener class, you must give 40 hours of volunteer service back to your community (and you don’t have to stop there – some Master Gardeners have 1000's of hours). For the first 40 volunteer hours you must work on three different projects. The three projects must be diverse: public speaking, weeding or planting, a diagnostic clinic, working in the gardens at the State Fairpark, etc.

When

The 40 hours must be completed by October 31st, 10 months after you complete your class. It is important to get project hours in early and not wait until the last minute because it’s more difficult to find projects late summer and early fall.

How

Review the SLCMG project descriptions. Contact the project coordinator to sign up. Come prepared to have fun.

Details

  1. You can count drive time to and from a project, and any preparation time for speeches.
  2. Time spent on Executive Board duties counts as volunteer hours.
  3. Red Butte Garden and Arboretum hours are limited: a maximum of 10 hours may count toward the first 40 hours.
  4. You cannot count hours worked at Temple Square until after you have completed your first 40 hours.

Reporting Hours

Hours should be submitted to Sarah Persens, Extension Service Executive Assistant. Include the project title, date of volunteer service, and total hours.
All hours must be reported by October 31 at the latest.
