Fresh From the Heart

Local gardeners are invited to share the fruits of their labors with others. Produce is picked up every Saturday during August and September, then delivered to the Salt Lake Food Bank. Master gardeners can receive credit for donations.

The Garden Patch Newsletter

The Garden Patch is the primary means of dispersing information to the Master Gardeners of Salt Lake County. Help our wonderful editor, Jenny Allgrunn, get the word out by sending in articles, line drawings (photographs don't reproduce well) and/or information of interest to the membership.

Gilgal Garden

Formerly the secret garden of Salt Lake, Gilgal Sculpture Garden is now a public city park, open daily for the enjoyment of all. Gilgal Sculpture Garden was envisioned, designed and created by Thomas Battersby Child, Jr. in the mid-twentieth century. Salt Lake Master Gardeners have been working to restore this unique garden to its original state.

Plant Lab/Native Plant Propagation Workshops

The PlantLab project is modeled after National Gardening Association's GrowLabs. Master Garener facilitators work with elementary and junior high school teachers to teach horticulture and plant science activities to school children or 'underserved' groups in the community. Native Plant Propagation Workshops teach the public how to grow Utah's decorative and waterwise native plants.

Public Relations/Talks to Community Groups

Master Gardeners man (and woman) information booths at shows and fairs, answering questions and giving out information to the public. Master Gardeners also talk to groups in the community, from schools to garden clubs to churches, upon request. It would help if Master Gardeners with knowledge in particular areas and with an interest in public speaking would contact a board member about speaking opportunities.

Utah AIDS Foundation

This is an urban garden with flowers, trees, shrubs, perennials and roses that need planting and maintenance. Project time is primarily spring through the fall. Contact: Kay Packard or Ann & Mike Cullis to schedule volunteer times.

Utah State Fair Park

This project starts in the spring and runs through the State Fair. Annual and perennial beds are planted and maintained. As of now, project volunteers are working on Wednesday nights. However you can contact the project manager to arrange to work on this project at most any time convenient to you.

Web Site

The Utah Master Gardener web site is an ongoing, 12 month a year, project — and, yes, it is a project you can earn volunteer hours for. To be viable, a web site must be constantly changing and evolving, and it can only do that with the help of many contributors. If you have any information, photos, drawings, etc. you think your fellow Master Gardeners would be interested in, please share.

Wheeler Farm

June 17, 1886 Sariah Hankinson Pixton married Henry Joseph Wheeler and together they made their home on this seventy-five acre farm. In 1969 Salt Lake County purchased Wheeler Historic Farm. It was placed on both the Utah State and National register of Historic Places in 1976. Master Gardeners work several gardens in the 120-year-old historic farm offering a wide variety of opportunities for volunteers.
